10 tricks with a USB thumb drive

Any ordinary USB memory device can do a lot more than you probably thought it could. It can carry programs, encryption and even a full installation of Windows XP! Here is our tenlist for the coolest things you can do with a USB thumb drive:

 Take your programs with you
We all know how frustrating it is when we take your files to another computer just to discover that the software required to read the files is not installed.
Here’s the simplest solution – take your programs with you – on your USB thumb drive. Here’s how to do it with Portable Apps:
1. Go to the Portable Apps website and download the installer, choosing the software you want to carry along.
2. Run the installer and install the software to the root of your USB thumb drive.
And you’re done! As soon as you connect your thumb drive into a computer, Portable Apps will open up automatically.
Surf anonymously
With Portable Apps and Firefox, you can surf the web without leaving any trace on the computer you are using. If you want extra security, install a Firefox security plugin such as FoxyProxy. To iput Firefox onto the drive, just copy-paste the Firefox folder from you computer, or install Firefox onto the thumb drive.
Set a program to run automatically (autorun)
Using autorun, you can set a program to start up automatically when you connect the drive to a computer. You can also use the same script for a data CD-ROM. Note that some computers have autorun disabled for security purposes. [Here's how to disable autorun.]
Open up notepad and paste the following script:
[autorun]
ShellExecute=filename
Label=description
UseAutoPlay=1
Make sure you replace filename with the full path to the file. For example, a file called program.exe in a folder called “programs” on the thumb drive would be /programs/program.exe
Replace description with a short description of the program, for example, My Jukebox or Mozilla Firefox.
Save the file as autorun.inf, making sure you select “All Programs” from the save menu, not “Text document”!
Help! I’m lost!
Ever lost a USB drive? Even if you haven’t, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll lose a few during your life. And with all the important information on it, it could be a disaster to have it fall into someone’s hands.
A good idea is to encrypt all the information on the drive, but you would still want it back, wouldn’t you? Luckily, the folks at the Daily Cup Of Tech have come up with a solution.

Save a program called “Help! I’m Lost!” on the drive, that a finder just can’t get around opening. The program opens a message box with your personal “I’m lost” message. It’s a good idea to offer the finder a bigger reward than the drive itself, so that they’ll be interested in contacting you.
Hide the drive inside something

Why not surprise your friends and co-workers by sticking something that looks like a broken USB cable into the computer’s USB drive?
You’ll be sure to get a few shocked faces when you start to play a movie from it.
The guys from Technobuzz.net show us how to do it. (You are gonna need an unbelievably small thumb drive for this…)
Secure your PC
Just like with an RFID badge, you can use a USB drive to lock and unlock a PC. Insert it to begin working and pull it out when you’ve finished, locking the computer. There are several programs for this . Rohos, a commercial program and WiKID, a semi-open source one.
If you really need to secure your computer with a USB drive, I suggest you give Rohos a try, as WiKID is rather complicated.
Portable jukebox
Don’t just carry the music with you, also carry the player! You can install audio programs such as WinAmp and CoolPlayer+ on your thumb drive. Just unextract the ZIP folders to the USB drive.
If you want the jukebox to start up automatically when you connect the memory stick to the computer, use the autorun feature shown tip 3 and point it to the exe of your audio player.
Encrypt your data
If you carry any sensitive indormation on your USB memory stick, a good idea is to encrypt it. Hardware-level encryption will help, but it will cost extra. You can get a free program to encrypt your data just as securely. For this I recommend TrueCrypt, but most others will also do.
You will need admin access on the computer you want to use your encrypted thumb drive on, so this it’s usability a little.
Run a standalone OS for dedicated tasks
The easiest OS to boot from a USB drive is probably Linux. There are many small capacity Linux versions out there that will fit on your drive. The best 3 are Puppy Linux, Damn Small Linux and Webconverger.
Make sure you select a version that needs less space than your USB drive’s maximum, so you have room for files and software.
And this leads us nicely to the final tip…
Run Windows itself from a USB thumb drive
Modifying Windows to work on a USB drive is quite difficult, but luckily there are some tools that will do it for us. Note that you will need a separate Windows license for this, as Microsoft only lets you use one for each single computer, and a USB drive is treated by them like a computer…
What you’ll need:
  1. A licensed copy of Windows
  2. A USB device, min. 1GB (We recommend a USB hard disk, as a flash memory stick will become unusable after 100000 writing processes. Assuming that only 2 processes are used per second, the drive will last only 60 days with 8 hours of work each day… A hard disk doesn’t have this problem.)

Remove “Always use the selected program” option from open with dialog

The Open With dialog in Windows allows you to open a file using different programs. Also, you can create or change the file type association by selecting the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" checkbox in the Open With dialog. Sometimes, users wrongly associate file types and end up having to fix the associations manually. To prevent this, you can remove the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" checkbox so that file type association using Open With dialog is not possible.

1. Launch Regedit.exe and navigate to the following branch:
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer

Note: If the above branch does not exist, you need to create it manually.
2. Create a new DWORD value named NoFileAssociate
3. Double-click NoFileAssociate and set its data to 1
4. Exit the Registry Editor.
The above registry change effects the current user account only. To implement the change for all users (machine-wide), create the NoFileAssociate value in the following branch:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer

Additional Information

The above edit when used in Windows 2000/XP, results in a grayed out "Always use the selected program…" checkbox. Whereas in Windows Vista & Windows 7, the checkbox is removed completely.

How to share files in Windows Vista

File sharing has both a good use and a questionable use.
For businesses, being able to access files remotely and also being able to collaborate on files easily is a good use. For businesses concerned about digital rights management, being able to share copyrighted material without control is a bad use. Deep within Windows Vista, Microsoft hopes to be able to address both of these issues.

One of the four layers of the .Net Framework 3 within Windows Vista is the Windows Communications Foundation (WCF), formerly known as Indigo. Similar to the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), which handles all the graphical elements within Windows Vista, WCF is specifically tasked with handling all the communications elements -- from basic networking to syncing files and folders with local mobile devices or remote servers. In Windows Home Premium, WCF can be found in the Sync Center, Windows Meeting Space, and within basic file- and folder-sharing capabilities within Windows Explorer. In Windows Business, you'll find the same features plus Offline files and folders, Roaming User Profiles, and Folder Redirection.
By default, all but password-protected sharing is turned off within Windows Vista. Home users enable and then limit what is shared among users on the same machine by adding or removing files from the new Public folder space. By combining digital rights management features within Office 2007 with group policy available in Windows Vista Business, businesses can limit who has access to share specific files and what permissions they also might need to update, copy, or even print the information. It's a sophisticated approach to what might otherwise seem a very simple problem. Now, instead of saying remote users have access to this drive or this file folder, you can restrict what is shared down to a specific file, and even then restrict how the user ultimately views or uses that file.

7 quick tips select domain name

Each domain name consists of two parts - the Mid Level Domain (MLD), and the Top Level Domain (TLD). The Mid Level Domain is the Ford in Ford.com, the Concrete-Home in Concrete-Home.com. This part of the domain name can consist of up to 63 characters in .com, .net, or .org domains. Only letters, numbers, or hyphens are permitted; no underbars, exclamation marks or periods. The Top Level Domain refers to the .com, .net, or .org part of the web address. There are also country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD's) such as .ca for Canada, .fr for France, or .us for the United States. In most cases, you will need to reside in that particular country if you wish to purchase a ccTLD.

1. Don't include a specific location, unless you serve only that location. Even if you do ship nationwide, you may never get the chance to let the consumer know that; consumers from other areas are not likely to click through from search engines if your domain includes a location.

2. Cut to the chase, keep it simple. The shorter the better. It's easier to remember.

3. Two minds are better than one. Make a visit to a webmaster forum and ask for suggestions. You'd be surprised by some of the great suggestions that you may find in a webmaster forum.

4. Buy your domain from Fast-on.com . Fast-on is owned by Entertop, a great guy whose staff provides great customer service.

5. Buy the variations. If you go buy BlueFind.com, why not also pick up BlueFind.net and other variation to protect your brand?

6. Don't pay the big bucks. Some domains have sold for millions - don't do it. Those dollars are more effectively spent building up a brand and advertising your products and/or services.

7. Keep it legit. Try to avoid .ws, .tv, .biz, etc. Most respect is given to .com, .net, or .org domains.

Ziddu.com is a Free Unlimited File Hosting which gives a commission to their members if their videos, photos or documents are downloaded by others. Why does ziddu.com pay their members? and where does ziddu.com get the budget or money to pay them?

Well, it is very simple to answer you know and here is why????

So, Ziddu.com gets the money/budget to pay their member from the advertisements in Ziddu.com.

How does Ziddu.com pay us? You will get $0.001 for every file which is downloaded by others. The commission will be paid through paypal or money bookers when your earning has minimal $ 10.
As well as getting the dollars from the downloaded files, you can also get the dollars through your affiliation or inviting somenone to join Ziddu.com. We will get $0.10 for one referral. 5 web hosting tips

Are you making plans of your web hosting requirements for 2009? Surely you are ready to purchase a web hosting plan for a new blog site or that online video family website you're thinking? Then it's a great time for you or your company to go through the following tips for a successful year of hosting! By adopting these simple steps, you will surely save money, and also guaranteed that your website has its most successful year ever before.

Tip #1: Upgrade to an Annual Plan - If you are satisfied with your hosting provider, think going to an annual payment system. By performing this, you can get advantage from a lower prorated monthly rate. If you are thinking to transfer to a new web host, you may also desire to think an annual plan as they mostly come with no set-up fee. Even better, think the discount of adding a 2nd year onto that annual hosting plan; sometimes adding the 2nd annual time period leads in very nominal extra cost as you receive a web hosting discount on the first year as well. For example, HostMonster offers a 1 year hosting plan which works out to $7.95/month, and a two-year price of $5.95/month.

Tip #2: The Internet economy keeps on to grow and global Internet traffic is thought to follow its regular use increase during 2008. Is your company website prepared for an increase in traffic during 2008? With monthly fees for dedicated servers coming down speedy over the past year, your business may desire to think moving to a dedicated environment which will provide more ability for servicing your online customers. You can review 2008 dedicated server specials at our Dedicated Server Showcase. At the very last, be sure that your present plan has enough bandwidth consideration. Even the shared space now provides close to unbounded bandwidth (considering what the average website really uses). Have a look at HostMonster - they offer 6,000 GB of monthly bandwidth for as low as $5.95/month. Similar to a cell phone, if your current website is meeting traffic overage charges, then it is time to think a larger hosting package.

Tip #3: Examine your Hosting Service Agreements. These agreements contain the 'legal terms' of your hosting contract and might be changed from time to time. The 'New Year' is a nice time to carefully examine the recent documents surrounding the relationship between you and your web host. For some customers, you may see that you are on a high-end SLA and could lower down your monthly service fee by receiving say a 99.8% uptime surety vs. a 99.9% standard.

Tip #4: Obtain a support domain for your company. Many companies are now permiting technical support and service follow-up online. With Internet access still growing on a worldwide level, you may desire to think safeguarding the domain name for a potential service/support site. For example, usxmodeltrains.com may desire to reserve usxtrainsupport.com. Also, think about registering some of the new top levels domains consisting .info and .biz - these can be useful in attracting more traffic to your website. Most web hosting companies now provide to purchase a free domain for you till you purchase their annual web hosting account.

Tip #5: go through the software upgrades! Each year, many providers of web design and server software launch new versions. For example, is your web host delivering the recent Windows or ASP.NET versions? Also, see that your company is using the recent design software to maximize your site visitor's experiences. By examining to look if your provider has the recent server versions, you can check their technical knowledge make sure maximum website uptime, and develop a website that is more competitive vs. your peers in terms of website interactivity and charactertics.

By adopting these simple tips, your business can maximize its online endeavor in 2009 by making sure a firm hosting environment while earning better knowledge about your web host.

10 things you need to know about web hosting

If you think that web hosting is a load of geek speak then I can assure you that you are in safe hands here. Web hosting is one of the most important elements of building a successful online business and there are a few things you need to know before you decide on which web hosting provider to go with.

Web hosting tip 1:
Space: What amount of space are you requiring? Are you looking at setting up simple one page websites, or are you wanting to develop your own product with audio downloads? I recently put an ebook and audio product together and could not understand why I couldn't download any of my audio. I was over my disk space and this could make or break your business.
*Please note: Keep your files tidy and delete whatever you don't need because extra files take up valuable space - lesson learnt!

Web hosting tip 2:
Bandwidth: This is the amount data that you are allowed to broadcast from your website each month. Your needs will differ significantly depending on whether you are running basic websites or a complete multi media experience.

Web hosting tip 3:
Customer Service: This goes without saying! Before choosing your web hosting provider contact the support desk or give them a call to see how responsive they are. If your website is down for some reason you want to get this sorted out as soon as possible.

Web hosting tip 4:
Extra Features: If you are new to the internet your initial needs will not be as demanding as the more experienced user. Extra features may include free scripts, PDF writing software, web audio features...and much more.

Web hosting tip 5:
Domains: A domain or URL is your website address. If you are planning on having a number of different websites then you will want a web hosting provider to offer unlimited domain hosting. Most of the time you will have to pay a minimal charge to transfer your domain name to your web hosting provider. Having additional domain names on one hosting account will also use up your disk space and bandwidth a lot quicker so this will be a factor when considering a web hosting provider also.

Web hosting tip 6:
Subdomains: Subdomains are the extensions you have on your domain, such as, www.success-system.co.uk/ultimatehosting. 'Ultimatehosting' is the subdomain. Most good web hosting providers will offer unlimited subdomains which is great because you don't have to keep buying a new domain name each time you want to set up a new website.

Web hosting tip 7:
Statistics: Good web hosting providers will offer a fully functional statistical analysis of your pages. From this information you will be able to see how much traffic you have had, what keywords people are typing in to find your page, what country your visitors are from...and so much more. Internet success is about testing and tracking and you can get a lot of this information from the statistics packages offered.

Web hosting tip 8:
Website developing software: Some web hosting providers offer a complete package that include web design software so if you are looking to create your own website a great cheap alternative is to have this included within your package for a minimal extra charge. The great thing with this is that you will have the support from your web hosting company whenever you run into any problems. They will be able to look at your entire back office to help rectify any problems.

Web hosting tip 9:
Email, Autoresponder, POP3 & Mail Forwarding: If you are serious about building a successful online business then you will want to automate your business as much as possible and also have the ability to create proper email addresses that are related to your website, such as support@success-system.co.uk rather than joeblogs@yahoo.com Forwarding is a great feature also that allows you to have a number of different email addresses that go to the same account.

Web hosting tip 10:
Control Panel: This is the panel that will allow you to do many of the features that I have mentioned above. Some are more user friendly than others. The first time I saw one I was a little overwhelmed as there are a lot of features on here. If you are a beginner there are some options that offer a basic user experience.
Now you have some information to start you off in the right direction for choosing your web hosting provider. It is worth spending a bit of time checking this out. I actually uses a number of different web hosting providers so after having made a choice you will probably use other services as your build your online business and have different requirements.

Choose the right domain name

Pick your domain before you launch your business. This is especially true if your market niche has lots of competition. Research your domain before you commit to a business plan.

Don't wait too long if you like a domain. While you're researching, you'll likely come across a couple of domains that attract you. You might be tempted to wait, since you haven't finalized or refined your business plan. Don't. A handful of domains isn't going to cost you much at an affordable registrar like GoDaddy, and once they're gone, they're gone. Chances are you can even resell the rejects at cost, if not a profit. Or "develop" them with unique content and point them to your main site for extra traffic.
Now for the controversial stuff. Which is best: the "keyword" domain, or the "creative-genius, snappy and brandable" domain?
KEYWORD NAME VS. CREATIVE-GENIUS BRANDABLE NAME A Keyword
Name is the boring, workhorse kind of domain. You see them everywhere. They bristle with hyphens: "best-anchovy-pizza-in-siberia.com." Or "super-labrador-accessories-and-golfballs.biz." On the face of it, they're hard to brand. They're hard to fit on business cards. They're really hard to explain over the phone to Aunt Martha.
On the other hand, a Creative-Genius Brandable Name is the sexy kind. The successes are sparkling: Yahoo!, Google, Amazon.com. You can shout these URLs across the room and the other guy will probably get it right. But note: the dot-com road is littered with hip, snappy business who failed to brand their product successfully, or get listed high in the search engines. Now their URLs all point to the same page: "server not found ..."

Google Security

Google is always adding new products and features. One of these is the Personalized Google Homepage. You can customize it with news, movies, weather, stock market reports and more. How convenient. But there is a dark side.

Google saves your search history. Every person, place, thing, or word you look up is stored in your history (BTW-same goes for the Google Toolbar). This can be cleared or paused on your end, but it will still be saved on the Google server. It's in their Privacy Policy:
"You can delete information from My Search History, and it will be removed from the service and no longer available to you. However, as is common practice in the industry, and as outlined in the Google Privacy Policy, Google maintains a separate logs system for auditing purposes and to help us improve the quality of our services for users."

So, if you have a Personalized Google Homepage, here's how to at least manage history items on your end...

Click the "My Search History" link then "Remove Items". Put a check next to the items on the list you want removed, or select "All". Finally, hit the "Remove" button.

If you don't want Search History activated, just click the "Pause" link. Again, the search info still goes to Google, but it doesn't show up in your search history display. To turn S.H. back on just hit "Resume".

As I mentioned, the Google Toolbar also keeps your history, but it doesn't track you like the Personalized Homepage. To turn off...

Go to the "Options" button and select the "Search" tab.

Uncheck "drop down search history", "Save the search history...", and "Automatically search..."   Hit OK.

Now your toolbar searches are known only to you. As for the personal homepage searches... at least no one outside of Google or the government can see what you looked up.

Increase the printing speed of your printer

You can improve the printing speed of your printer with managing the print spooler option. Basically printer spooler holds your prints for some time then send to printer for print out. By default on most printers, printer spooler option is enabled but you turn off to specify that the file should be sending to the printer and not spooled.

Here printer spooler option might be different location in your printer but on most printers you can turn off by going to Start, Setting then Printers. Now right click on the icon of the printer that you are using. Click Properties and select the Advanced tab. Here click on “Print directly to printer” option. This will tie up your application until the printer has all the data, but your print job should finish more quickly. Printing directly to the printer will also come in handy if your print spooler crashes and you need to print before you reboot your PC.
